There has been no better feel-good moment of the year than Rory McIlroy winning the 2025 Masters to claim a career slam, becoming the first European man to do so. The 35-year-old was brought to his knees after this week’s goosebump play-off victory over Justin Rose at Augusta, which ended his major championship drought dating back to 2014.
McIlroy is also the first person in the tournament’s history to have two double bogeys in the final round and still win the Masters. His week, one in which he had the green jacket in and out of his clasp at least three times, was the purest lesson in how not to give up.
When asked afterwards about his 11-year major title drought, McIlroy said, “It’s been difficult.”
“I’ve tried to approach this tournament with the most positive attitude each and every time I’ve showed up. The cumulative experience that I’ve gained coming back here each and every year, I just feel like I get a little bit more comfortable with the shots needed.
“It’s so hard to stay patient. It’s so hard to keep coming back every year and trying your best and not being able to get it done.
“There were points on the back nine today when I thought, ‘Have I let this slip again?’
“It’s been an emotionally draining week for a lot of reasons.”
He continued: “I’ve literally made my dreams come true today, and I would say to every boy and girl listening to this, believe in your dreams, and if you work hard enough and if you put the effort in, you can achieve anything you want.”
How good is sport? At a time when the world’s in a spin from older egotistical male leaders attempting to reign control over foes and allies alike, McIlroy reminds us all of what’s important. It’s the simple, honest pursuit of never giving up, following your passion and doing your best. And it’s a lesson that transcends sport to apply to business and industry, including real estate.
Have a fantastic and safe Easter long weekend.
