Home Is Where the Wellness Is

•By Amie Back

Australians are turning their homes into personal sanctuaries and it is one of the biggest renovation conversations of 2026.

A new way of thinking about home

When did the bathroom stop being just a bathroom? For a growing number of Australians, it is now a daily retreat. And that spare room? Increasingly it is a home gym, a meditation space, or a quiet reading nook. Wellness spaces are one of the hottest renovation trends happening right now and it is not just a luxury reserved for high end homes. It is showing up across all price points, in suburbs right across the country.

Why Australians are investing in wellness at home

People want their homes to work harder for them. After years of blurred work and life boundaries, Australians are investing in spaces that genuinely help them decompress and recharge. Architects and builders nationwide are reporting the same shift. Features like spa bathrooms, home saunas, plunge pools, and dedicated fitness rooms have moved from wish lists onto actual renovation plans. Bathrooms alone now account for around 35% of all residential renovation spending in Australia.

What wellness design actually looks like

You do not need a major overhaul to embrace this trend. Natural materials, good lighting, indoor greenery, and a freestanding bath can completely transform how a space feels. Homeowners are also incorporating soft curved architecture, natural stone and timber flooring, and steam rooms into their designs. It is less about grand gestures and more about intention, creating spaces that invite you to slow down and feel genuinely at ease.

The connection to nature and wellbeing

Biophilic design is playing a big role in how wellness spaces are being shaped in 2026. This approach is all about weaving natural elements into the way we live at home, through timber, stone, plants, water features, and an abundance of natural light. Research consistently shows that environments connected to nature reduce stress and improve focus. For Australian homeowners, this philosophy fits perfectly with our climate and our deep appreciation for the outdoors, bringing that sense of calm inside in a way that feels both considered and genuinely liveable.
