I’m proud of this one…

There’s something about a marathon event that keeps you coming back for more. If you’re yet to clock up one yourself, or have tuned out already at the thought of running, stop. Keep reading. This is about more than the distance, and goes beyond just a fad that every second person has taken up since those depressing Covid days.

Last weekend I officially conquered marathon number 3 when I lined up with a record crowd to tackle 42.2km at the Gold Coast Marathon. I crossed in 3:13, some 46 minutes faster than my first hit-out in 2018 at Noosa.

It’s not about the running, or even the times. It’s about setting a goal, following a plan, and achieving regardless of unforeseeable challenges along the way. It’s the stubbornness to refuse to take the easy option of sleeping in on rainy mornings, the determination to find comfort in the uncomfortable, and the drive to turn the grind into a habit.

I want my kids to be what they can see. To experience, as much as they can, the process of actioning success and all the highs and lows that are inevitably attached. Yes, the PB last week was extremely rewarding but the satisfaction was obtained in the steps taken before that start line was crossed on Sunday.

This was by no means a solo effort, rare is a success that is. Mine was shared with my family and entire team who were on the sidelines in support. The atmosphere was electric, but the personal connection made it significantly more memorable. Thanks also to the more than 1200 volunteers and countless community groups who gave up their time and dedicated their energy to ensuring a seamless event.

It doesn’t have to be a marathon, or even a Parkrun, but set yourself the challenge of tackling something you find difficult/scary/intimidating. You’ll be a better person for it.

I hope you enjoy the read.
